The victims of Monday’s courthouse shootings in Berrien County have been honored in Washington, D.C. On Tuesday, Congressman Fred Upton spoke on the House floor, expressing his grief for the loss of Joseph Zangaro and Ronald Kienzle.

“I ask my colleagues and those who hear this message across this country to pray for the families of the two victims, and the speedy recovery of another deputy, James Atterberry, Jr., and a civilian caught in the middle, Kenya Ellis.”

In the U.S. Senate, Michigan Senator Gary Peters said Monday’s incident reminds us of the dangers faced by all kinds of public safety officers each day.

“Whether as a member of a local police department, a rapid transit officer, or a court bailiff, public safety officers risk their lives every day to keep our families and our communities safe,” Peters said.

Peters said he and all of Michigan grieve. Upton said the tragedy may have happened in the blink of an eye, but, “we will never forget.” Berrien County Courthouse security officers Joseph Zangaro and Ronald Kienzle were killed Monday when an inmate grabbed an officer’s gun. Two others were shot.
