Governor Gretchen Whitmer has signed an executive order aimed at curbing price-gouging of emergency supplies and food during the coronavirus outbreak. The temporary measure, which takes effect Monday, restricts a person or business from reselling goods or products that are “grossly in excess of the purchase price of the product.” Attorney General Dana Nessel explained the order Sunday afternoon.
“No one shall sell any goods, material, emergency supply or consumer food item more than 20% higher than they charged as of March 9, 2020 unless they person demonstrates that the price increase is attributable to an increase in the cost of bringing that product to market.”
Nessel’s office has said it received over 75 complaints of price-gouging.
