The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department says two people were arrested Wednesday following a traffic stop in Waverly Township involving a wanted felon allegedly armed with a handgun.
Sheriff Daniel Abbott said detectives with the Van Buren County Narcotics Unit received information that a wanted felon was at a residence in Waverly Township and was in possession of a firearm. Detectives later observed the suspect enter a vehicle and conducted a traffic stop for a traffic violation near 46th Street and 28th Avenue at about 2:30 p.m.
Authorities say the wanted felon was located in the back seat of the vehicle and was found with a loaded 9mm handgun. He was taken into custody on an outstanding felony warrant from Allegan County for larceny, along with new charges including carrying a concealed weapon and felon in possession of a firearm.
Detectives also arrested a second person who was seated in the front passenger seat. Deputies say that individual had multiple warrants issued by Pokagon Band Tribal Police, along with a misdemeanor traffic warrant from Van Buren County.
Law enforcement has not publicly identified the detained individuals. Both suspects were taken to the Van Buren County Jail without incident.
