More expectant mothers are relying on midwives to help them give birth.
Midwives are having a resurgence in popularity, but there are a lot of misconceptions about them. Corewell Health certified nurse midwife Renee Sokolowski says they can manage women’s healthcare, labor, and delivery but work with a doctor if a woman has a high-risk pregnancy.
“We rely on them for things that fall outside of our scope if you become high risk, and there’s various levels of what’s considered high risk,” Sokolowski said. “But that also doesn’t mean we can’t stay in your care. We can still manage the normal parts of pregnancy while we collaborate with our physicians for more of the high risk situations.”
Sokolowski says in addition to labor and delivery care, midwives can provide contraception counseling, menopause support, and other healthcare.
