The South Haven City Council has been formally introduced to the city’s new chief lifeguard, David Figueredo.
After much work to reestablish the lifeguard program, Figueredo was announced as its first chief in March. Now in town and addressing the city council for the first time Monday, he said he’s ready to work hard for residents and visitors.
“Even in a short time, it’s clear that this is a community of genuine, caring people who look out for one another, and I felt that same support as a newcomer,” Figueredo said. “I also deeply respect the passion this community has for water safety. That commitment was a major factor in what drew me to this role, and I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to serve in this capacity. I look forward to building this program to the highest possible standards and contributing to a safe and successful season.”
Figueredo also thanked city staff for a smooth onboarding.
Figueredo was previously a beach lifeguard manager in Evanston, Illinois, where he led lifeguards through numerous live emergency responses, delievered in-service training, and was named Evanston Lifeguard Service Manager of the Year in 2015. From 2017 to 2019, he was lakefront supervisor, overseeing five municipal beaches and 90 lifeguards in Evanston.
Council members welcomed Figueredo, saying they’re excited to see the lifeguard program launch. Police Chief Adam DeBoer said having the chief lifeguard on the job has put the program more on track.
