Red Sox 8, Tigers 6 – Rafaela’s tiebreaking two-run single helps Red Sox to 8-6 Patriots’ Day win over Tigers
Pinch hitter Ceddanne Rafaela had a tiebreaking, two-run single in the seventh inning and the Red Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 8-6 to salvage a split of their four-game series in Boston’s annual Patriots’ Day game. Isiah Kiner-Falefa also had a two-run single for the Red Sox, who halted a two-game skid. The Tigers lost for just the second time in 10 games after taking the last two. Boston starter Sonny Gray left the game in the third inning with right hamstring tightness.

Cubs 5, Phillies 1 – Rea and Swanson help the Cubs beat the slumping Phillies 5-1 for their 6th straight win
Colin Rea pitched into the seventh inning and the Chicago Cubs beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-1 for their sixth consecutive win. Dansby Swanson hit a three-run homer for Chicago, and Michael Conforto added a sacrifice fly. The Cubs have outscored their opponents 44-14 during the team’s longest win streak since it also won six in a row from Aug. 26 to Sept. 1, 2024. They are tied with Atlanta for the majors’ longest active win streak. The Phillies have dropped six in a row and seven of eight. They have been outscored 42-10 during their losing streak.

MLB – Counsell thinks an MLB rule that only affects Ohtani and the Dodgers is ‘bizarre’
Cubs manager Craig Counsell thinks a Major League Baseball rule that allows the Los Angeles Dodgers to carry 14 pitchers because of Shohei Ohtani is “bizarre.” Major league teams are allowed to have a maximum of 13 pitchers on their active 26-man roster from opening day through Aug. 31. From Sept. 1 through the end of the season, the roster limits increase to 14 pitchers and 28 active players. But Ohtani is designated as a two-way player, which means he doesn’t count as a pitcher. So the reigning World Series champions have a total of 14 pitchers on their active roster. Counsell says, “There’s not another player like that, but one team gets different rules for that player."

There had never been a unanimous NBA Defensive Player of the Year. Until now. Victor Wembanyama was announced Monday night as the league’s top defensive player. The San Antonio center was second in the voting for DPOY as a rookie. Wembanyama was the favorite last season until a medical condition ended his season prematurely, then left no doubt this year. NBA – Green predicts Kerr won’t be back. The Warriors can’t imagine life without him
Draymond Green doesn’t expect Steve Kerr to return as coach of the Golden State Warriors. Green said on his podcast Monday that he hopes Kerr returns but “it felt like that was it” after Golden State lost at Phoenix in a play-in tournament game. Green added that he doesn’t even know if he’ll be playing for the Warriors next season. Kerr just completed a two-year contract worth $35 million. The 60-year-old has won four championships during his 12 seasons leading the Warriors. After the loss to the Suns, Kerr said he wasn’t sure whether he’d be back.

Golf -Aloha, PGA Tour. Hawaii will be without a tour event in 2027
The PGA Tour is bidding aloha to Hawaii on its schedule. The Sentry at Kapalua was canceled last January because of a water dispute that kept the Plantation course from being ready in time. Wisconsin-based Sentry has a sponsorship deal through 2035 and will be going elsewhere. One likely landing spot is Torrey Pines in San Diego. The PGA Tour has also confirmed the Sony Open in Honolulu also won’t be on the 2027 schedule. It’s part of a revamped schedule that’s slowly changing. The tour is talking to the Sony Open about being a PGA Tour Champions event next year.

NFL – Steelers are still waiting to hear from Rodgers about returning for a 22nd season
The Pittsburgh Steelers are still waiting for Aaron Rodgers to decide whether he wants to return for a 22nd season. Steelers general manager Omar Khan says the club remains in frequent communication with the four-time MVP, who led Pittsburgh to an AFC North title last season. Rodgers’ status is unlikely to play a significant role in the club’s strategy when the NFL draft descends on the Steel City this week. The Steelers will head into the draft with 12 picks, including the 21st overall selection in the first round.

NFL – Bears QB Caleb Williams hoping to maintain momentum despite changes
Quarterback Caleb Williams feels prepared for a second year under Ben Johnson’s coaching with the Chicago Bears. The team won the NFC North last year for the first time since 2018, but Williams says there’s more work to do. He’s excited to return for offseason conditioning and to see new and familiar faces. Some changes include the retirement of center Drew Dalman and the trade of wide receiver DJ Moore. Williams believes his experience in Johnson’s offense will ease the transition with new center Garrett Bradbury.

NFL –Mendoza embraces the marathon draft process as he embarks on his 1st step in NFL
Some NFL draft prospects get worn out by the NFL’s marathon draft process. Fernando Mendoza has embraced it. He did the interviews, made the rounds and firmed up his draft night plans with his trademark smile and positive attitude. Now all he can do is wait to see what happens Thursday night. The Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback and overwhelming favorite to be taken No. 1 overall says as he embarks on a new partnership with pharmaceutical company Pfizer to push early cancer screenings, that he’s enjoyed each step along the path to the draft.
