Michigan is one step closer to having an official duck.
The Michigan Senate has approved a bill naming the wood duck as the state duck. It would join the robin, the painted turtle, and the white-tailed deer as official state animals.
Natural Resources Commission Chair Becky Humphries says the wood duck is the perfect pick.
“I know the department did not take a position on what of the many wonderful water fowl species we have in Michigan should be our state duck, but the wood duck is very colorful, it’s prevalent in Michigan, it’s one of the more prominent ducks in the bag, and it’s one of the ducks that hunters love to shoot,” Humphries said.
The legislation now goes to Governor Gretchen Whitmer for her signature.
