Another year will mean more construction on I-94 in Berrien County.

The Michigan Department of Transportation’s Nick Schirripa tells us after two years of reconstructing the highway between Stevensville and Benton Harbor, there’s still one more year to go. So, what’s MDOT going to do in 2026?

We are rebuilding the eastbound lanes this year in 2026,” Schirripa said. “Obviously, that’s going to involve a lot of those same interchanges that we had westbound coaches at last year. We had eastbound coaches this year for ramp repaving and rebuilding, bridge work, that kind of stuff. So what happened westbound in ‘25 is going to happen eastbound in ‘26.”

Schirripa says that applies to work near the highway as well.

A lot of those intersections or the interchanges where we saw the westbound ramp closures in ‘25, we’ll see probably those similar eastbound ramp closures in ’26.”

Schirripa says, once again, there will be two lanes of travel in each direction throughout construction. The work will start in late March or early April, depending on the weather.

Drivers may have also noticed some activity in the area of Niles Road and I-94 in St. Joseph Township lately, to the north of the Panera Bread location. We’re told by township officials that MDOT is preparing to build a new on ramp to eastbound I-94 there, where a gas station was once located. Schirripa says he can’t confirm those plans, but a ramp reconfiguration is possible.
