While Michigan legislative leaders and the governor haggle over a budget, state Senator Aric Nesbitt says it’s important for them to prioritize what matters most.

The House Republican plan and the Senate Democratic plan have major differences to be worked out, but Nesbitt tells us that House spending plan eliminates waste and potential fraud.

Fighting to make sure that families are able to keep more of the money that they earn and stop the waste, fraud, and abuse in our state,” Nesbitt said. “And it’s gotten pretty bad as we’ve seen from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation spending tens of millions of dollars for projects that don’t create any jobs.”

Nesbitt says the plan includes $3 billion more for roads, with a big priority placed on local roads. He says it also includes plenty of funding for education and law enforcement.

Nesbitt thinks lawmakers should be able to avoid a state government shutdown.

Let’s get it done. Let’s work on making sure we’re  putting kids and workers and families first so we’re not raising taxes — they’re already paying enough in taxes — and that we’re prioritizing.”

The deadline for a state budget is October 1. After that, we could get a shutdown.

Nesbitt says the goal of Republicans is to approve a plan aimed at helping people make it in Michigan without paying too much in taxes.
