Michigan has recorded another case of human West Niles Virus for the year, this time in Oakland County.
So far in 2025, Livingston County and Emmet County also have confirmed cases.
No travel was reported by the Oakland County patient. However, everyone is encouraged to use Environmental Protection Agency-registered insect repellent and to avoid time outdoors, especially from dusk to dawn. Oakland County Public Health Chief Mark Hansell explains other ways to help prevent mosquito bites.
“You can do things around your home as well,” Hansell said. “You can try to prevent standing water in the yard, whether you have a bird bath or some old flower pots or a kiddie pool or something like that. You’re going to want to change that water out at least once a week.”
Until the first hard frost of the year, the community is urged to protect themselves from mosquitos.
