This Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, and doctors say it’s never too early to be diagnosed.
Earlier diagnoses can lead to better outcomes, especially with the recent FDA approval of the first ever non-invasive blood test to diagnose patients. Wayne State University Associate Neurology Professor Dr. Rohit Marawar says the test makes it easier to determine what medication to use, two of which were just FDA approved in 2023 and 2024.
“These medications work by removing the amyloid plaque, which is one of the main proteins that are deposited in the brain and that cause Alzheimer’s disease,” Marawar said. “By no means are these medications a cure, but they do slow down the disease.”
FDA approval gives way for insurance coverage, making the disease less expensive for patients and families to cope with.
