US-12 construction continues as the rebuilding project moves into the next phase. Starting Monday, Oct. 14, Michigan Department of Transportation will be closing Third Street south of US-12 in Niles.

MDOT spokesperson Nick Schirripa says the closure is expected to be in place for four weeks.

“Just north of Bell Road up to US 12 so they can rebuild the south half of that intersection.”

During the closure, traffic will be detoured on Bell Road and M-51. Schirripa tells us they’re in the last steps in the US-12 project.

“We are looking at being completely done, being all the lanes, all the intersections, everything open by mid-November. So before Thanksgiving, we’ll be done and out of the way for the most part.”

This project is part of the $27 million investment to rebuild US-12/M-51 intersection.
