Leaders from Benton Harbor and Benton Township are planning to announce a new effort to crack down on violence in the community following several recent shootings and out of control illegal block parties.
Benton Township Supervisor Cathy Yates tells us she and Benton Harbor Mayor Marcus Muhammad will speak at 10 a.m. today Tuesday at a press conference at Benton Harbor City Hall.
The news follows a fatal shooting near a block party at Broadway and Emery over the weekend. We at the radio stations spotted a late-night party being held in our parking lot around 4 a.m. Sunday. Yates tells us she’s also heard from Signature Toyota about damage done at their property by the partiers.
Yates is expecting the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department and Michigan State Police to join the police chiefs from Benton Township and Benton Harbor to make an announcement Tuesday. Also on hand will be Berrien County Prosecutor Amy Byrd, Benton Harbor Area Schools Superintendent Kelvin Butts, and local clergy.
Yates tells us, “We plan to stop this mess.”
