Mackinac Island is beautiful all the time, but the annual Lilac Festival kicks off on Friday, making it even nicer.

The Mackinac Island Tourism Bureau’s Steph Castelein says the event was recently named the second best flower festival by USA Today’s Ten Best.

The annual Lilac Festival is our largest event on the island,” Castelin said. “For us it kind of kicks off the summer. We’ve been open for about a month, but the Lilac Festival is kind of a true testament to those warmer days and everything being open. So we’re really excited. We’re celebrating 76 years this year. 76th annual Lilac Festival.”

Castelein says there are 250 different varieties of lilacs on Mackinac Island.

The festival includes lilac infused food and drinks, walking tours, planting seminars, and a parade. It runs through June 16.
