Advocates for a minimum wage increase in Michigan are calling on state lawmakers to intervene after a public initiative to put the issue before voters failed.
Late last week, Michigan Supreme Court justices refused to intercede after the Michigan Board of State Canvassers, made up of two Democrats and two Republicans, deadlocked on the ballot measure
Saru Jayaraman is president of One Fair Wage, which is advocating for a $15 an hour minimum wage.
“Workers not only want this, they are willing to go vote on this issue. And that is why we are calling on the legislature to listen to the will of the voters as Republicans have not. They’re blocking the will of the voters and just change that number to 15, which is what voters over and over again have asked for.”
The ballot question to raise Michigan’s minimum wage was rejected after a change was made to the language of the petition. It happened after the proposal was initially approved, but before signature collection began.
