The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department has honored two deputies for their efforts to keep the community safe.
At a Thursday meeting, Berrien County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Sean Soulard said Deputy Nicholas Jewel found a missing 81-year-old man in Lincoln Township one stormy night in February.
“At 1:10 a.m. Deputy Jewell located Mr. Paul, who was cold and wet from the thunderstorm,” Soulard said. “Deputy Jewell’s keen eyes spotted Paul lying in a grassy ditch. Mr. Paul complained of leg pain and Deputy Jewell assisted him.”
Jewel was given the Lifesaving Award.
Also Thursday, Berrien County Sheriff Chuck Heit presented Deputy Aaron Nannfeldt with the Medal of Valor, the sheriff’s department’s highest honor. Nannfeldt saved the life of fellow officers in a shootout in Hagar Township on November 13.
“Deputy Aaron Nanfeld heard the shots and took up a position where he was able to engage and stop the suspect as the suspect continued to shoot at police,” Heit said. “Deputy Nanfeld saved the lives of two police officers with his actions that day.”
An officer with the Coloma Township Police Department was shot in the exchange with the suspect but has since recovered.
Sheriff Heit said Nannfeldt has given of himself throughout his 24 years with the department.
