Dylan Larkin scored a power-play goal 1:09 into overtime and the Detroit Red Wings beat the Florida Panthers 3-2, snapping a 10-game losing streak in the head-to-head series. Michael Rasmussen and Robby Fabbri scored in regulation for the Red Wings, who are 6-0-1 in their last seven games. Alex Lyon made 32 saves against his former team. Sam Reinhart and Gustav Forsling scored for the Panthers, and Sergei Bobrovsky made 27 saves. Florida has lost a season-high three straight (0-1-2). It was Detroit’s first game without forward Patrick Kane, who will also miss Friday’s game in Carolina due to a lower-body injury. The injury is unrelated to the hip surgery he had in the offseason.
Blackhawks at Sabres – PPD – NHL postpones Blackhawks-Sabres game because of snow-related travel restrictions
The NHL has postponed the game between the Chicago Blackhawks and Buffalo Sabres because of travel restrictions in western New York for extreme winter weather. The league announced the game scheduled for Wednesday night would instead be played Thursday night. There’s a travel ban in place for the city of Buffalo and local executives were hoping the league would move back the game in the name of public safety. The Blackhawks had made it to town, which is usually enough for the NHL to decide to go on with a game.

Karl-Anthony Towns scored 27 points for Minnesota, which has won three straight. Jaden McDaniels had 23 points and Rudy Gobert added 19 points and 16 assists. Jaden Ivey scored 32 points for the Pistons, who were starting a six-game homestand without Cade Cunningham (knee). Bojan Bogdanovic had 20 points and Jalen Duren added 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Pascal Siakam was traded to the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday night, ending a run of nearly eight years with Toronto during which he was a two-time All-NBA selection, two-time All-Star and part of the team that won the 2019 NBA title. His next chapter: teaming up with Tyrese Haliburton on a Pacers team that started the day as the highest-scoring club in the NBA and now has even more offensive firepower for the second half of the season. It took Indiana three future first-round picks to get the deal done, but the Pacers also managed to hang on to their four leading scorers this season and add another star to the mix.
NBA – Warriors assistant coach Dejan Milojević, 46, dies after heart attack
Golden State Warriors assistant coach Dejan Milojević has died in Salt Lake City after suffering a heart attack. The 46-year-old was part of the staff that helped the Warriors win the 2022 NBA championship. He also was a mentor to two-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic and a former star player in his native Serbia. Milojević was in his third season with the Warriors. He suffered the medical emergency during a private team dinner on Tuesday night. The NBA postponed Wednesday night’s game between the Warriors and the Utah Jazz. The league did not immediately announce a rescheduled date.

NFL – McCarthy will return as coach of the Dallas Cowboys after stunning wild-card loss
Mike McCarthy will get another chance to end a nearly three-decade stretch without a deep playoff run for the Dallas Cowboys. Owner and general manager Jerry Jones says McCarthy will be back for a fifth season as coach after a stunning 48-32 wild-card loss to Green Bay. The Cowboys were the first No. 2 seed to lose to the last team to get in since the 14-team format was adopted in 2020. They haven’t been past the divisional round since the 1995 season. That was when Dallas won the last of the storied franchise’s five Super Bowl titles. Jones says there is “great benefit” to the continuity of bringing McCarthy back.
NFL – Colts owner Irsay found unresponsive, struggling to breathe in December 911 call
First responders found Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay unresponsive and struggling to breathe in early December when they responded to an emergency call from inside the home, TMZ.com has reported. The online outlet cited police records that detailed the Dec. 8 incident. According to TMZ, the police report revealed Irsay had a “blue skin tone” and was treated with Narcan, a medicine that can reverse an opioid overdose. Eventually, he was transported to a hospital. Irsay has publicly acknowledge his battle with addiction, most recently in November when he told HBO Sports he had sought out treatment at least 15 times.
NFL – Helmet manufacturer: Mahomes’ shattered lid in playoff game ‘did its job’
The manufacturer of the helmet that Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes shattered during their AFC wild-card game with Miami says it “did its job” by protecting him on a helmet-to-helmet collision Saturday night. The game was the fourth-coldest in NFL history. The temperature at kickoff was minus-4 degrees Fahrenheit, and winds gusting to more than 25 mph made the wind chill approach minus-30 during the game. Certor Sports, which makes the VICIS helmet that Mahomes was wearing, said the extreme conditions “are bound to test the limits of even the highest-performing products.” But the helmet still protected the NFL MVP.
Amazon will invest in Diamond Sports as part of a bankruptcy restructuring agreement
Amazon will partner with Diamond Sports as part of a restructuring agreement as the largest owner of regional sports networks looks to emerge from bankruptcy. Diamond owns 18 networks under the Bally Sports banner. Those networks have the rights to 37 professional teams — 11 baseball, 15 NBA and 11 NHL, including the Detroit Tigers, Pistons, and Red Wings. Diamond Sports has been in Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings since it filed for protection last March. The terms of the restructuring agreement were announced Wednesday by Diamond Sports. Amazon had no immediate comment. Under the agreement, Amazon will make a minority investment in Diamond and enter into a commercial arrangement to provide access to Diamond’s content via Prime Video.
Tennis – Top-ranked Swiatek escapes with a narrow win over 2022 runner-up Collins
Top-ranked Iga Swiatek has escaped with a narrow 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 win over 2022 runner-up Collins to advance to the third round of the Australian Open. Swiatek was up a set and a break before the American player rallied to take the second set and race to a 4-1 lead in the third. Swiatek absorbed the sustained pressure from Collins’ powerful groundstrokes until she regained momentum and went on a match-winning five-game roll. Both players beat past Australian Open champions in the first round. Swiatek defeated 2020 champion Sofia Kenin and Collins had a three-set win over 2016 winner Angelique Kerber.
