The Benton Township Police Department has been growing its ranks.

Speaking to township trustees this week, Police Chief Greg Abrams said he promised to address the shortage of officers when he was hired, and that’s what he’s been working to do.

“I have hired at least one part timer, and three full time officers who are currently working at this time,” Abrams said. “I also have one cadet going to the academy on January 22, and I also interviewed two more candidates today.”

Abrams introduced one new recruit who just completed the academy, noting another who just started after completing the academy couldn’t be there because he was working.

Police agencies throughout southwest Michigan have been struggling with a shortage of officers.

Benton Township recently hired a private security firm to help with the holiday workload by having private patrols outside of busy shopping areas.
