Survivors and advocates gathered Tuesday to celebrate the passage of domestic violence bills in the Michigan Legislature.
Last week, a new package of bills was passed that will keep those convicted of domestic violence from buying or possessing a gun for eight years after their sentence.
Tanesha Ash-Shakoor is a supporter of the bills and domestic violence survivor.
“As a survivor, I know all too well how quickly an abuser can escalate,” Ash-Shakoor said. “I too have looked death in the face, but I am fortunate enough to be here today to be a voice for those who have lost their lives to gun violence. This bill will aid and prevent more horror stories and hold abusers accountable.”
The bills were passed on November 1 in a bipartisan vote. They now head to the governor’s desk.
