Two major pieces of proposed gun reform legislation are advancing through the Michigan Senate.
Senate Bills 471 and 472, which made their way through a committee vote this week, would prohibit a person convicted of a domestic violence-related misdemeanor from possessing or using a firearm or ammunition.
Testifying in favor of the reform was Celeste Kanpurwala from the Michigan Chapter of Mom’s Demand Action.
“We’re not talking about pencils, we’re talking about domestic violence,” Kanpurwala said. “This is a public safety issue. Access to a gun makes it five times more likely that a woman will die at the hands of her abuser.”
Testifying against the bills passage were groups including the Michigan Open Carry. Representatives said the legislation will make it too easy to take away someone’s constitution right to bear arms.
Both measures now go before the full Senate.
