After emergency repairs and several months of living in hotels, St. Joe’s Lakeview Terrace residents are moving back home.
More than a year after discovering building-wide plumbing leaks and resulting mold in the walls, the Lakeview Terrace emergency renovation project is nearly complete.
Executive Director Nicol Brown says they’ve replaced all the plumbing and fixtures in the apartments, updated some electrical, and installed new flooring and paint. As of last Friday, residents started moving back in.
“The residents, they were ready and I’m ready for them. So right now we’re moving in floors three through nine.”
Remaining residents are expected to be moved in when some final repair details are complete. Brown estimates everyone will be back in the building by Labor Day.
The emergency repairs affected the entire 107-unit, public housing structure. Tenants stayed in area hotels while crews worked.
The total cost to repair is just over $6 million – paid for by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development. Brown says next on the to-do list is a new boiler. She said the current boiler suffered repeated issues last winter.
