Two bills that have been introduced in the Michigan House that call for allowing juveniles to get out of prison after ten years. Democratic state Representative Donovan McKinney represents a section of Detroit and Warren. He was asked about convicted murderers like Ethan Crumbley, who pleaded guilty to the 2021 shooting at Oxford High School that left four students dead and injured seven others.

“In that particular case, it depends on what the prosecution does,” McKinney said. “So, I don’t have a say in that, but we should be able to, as a state, not infringe on somebody’s ability to fight for a second chance.”

Opponents say ten years in prison for murder is not enough and that victims would have to relive the crime. Four pieces of legislation call for convicts under the age of 19 to be eligible for parole after ten years. However, other legislation would increase the number of years to 25.
