The stalemate over a debt ceiling increase continues with President Biden demanding a clean bill from Congress to raise the ceiling to avoid a government default and Republicans demanding trillions in cuts if he’s to get it. Congressman Bill Huizenga tells us he sees no reason why the president can’t come to the table.
“That is what’s happened in the past,” Huizenga said. “I have voted for debt ceiling increases in the past, and I’ve voted against them in the past. My criteria, sort of my measuring stick is are we improving the situation? Are we improving the process of our spending?”
Huizenga says there could be negotiations if Biden would agree. What if he doesn’t?
“I would say that he and Chuck Schumer are responsible for a government shutdown. This would literally become a Schumer shutdown if they are not willing to budge at all. I would hope that isn’t the case.”
However, Huizenga stresses no one wants a default on the national debt. A House Republican plan approved last week would limit spending growth and pull back unspent COVID money. Huizenga says it would save $4.8 trillion over the next ten years.
