Some election recounts held this week in Berrien County have resulted in no changes to the results. Berrien County Clerk Sharon Tyler tells us her staff recounted the November 8 results in three communities Tuesday.
The recount in the village of Berrien Springs did not change the election results, nor did the recount in the city of Buchanan. A recount for the Coloma Public Schools results did not change the final outcome, although candidate Deb Frank gained five votes. She originally lost by 15 now, and now she’s lost by ten.
Tyler tells us the Coloma recount had to be done twice because the staff tallying the results in the first recount produced different numbers. She says a possible reason for why a candidate’s vote count would change is that some voters overvoted, meaning they selected more candidates on their ballot than they were supposed to and then crossed out a name.
Meanwhile, Tyler’s staff will be in Allegan Thursday to take part in a statewide recount of results for Proposals Two and Three from last month. She says Berrien is one of a handful of counties selected for that recount, and it will be recounting results from Bridgman, Chikaming Township, St. Joseph Township, and Royalton Township. They were randomly selected for the recount.
