A Mishawaka man is facing charges after a chase with police in Berrien County and south of the state line on Thursday. The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department says officers went to pull over a stolen 1986 Ford F-250 pickup on South Third Street near Ontario Road in Niles Township when the driver took off down South Third Street and into Indiana on Kenilworth Road. The vehicle turned onto Cleveland Road toward Riverside Drive, where it was unable to make a corner at East Marion Street and launched down an embankment into the St. Joseph River. The driver, Sebastian Heintzelman of Mishawaka, was able to free himself and was helped back to shore by a fisherman. He was then taken to South Bend Memorial Hospital. He’s being charged with fleeing and eluding and possession of stolen property.
