Police have a simple message for how to keep guns away from children.
“Get a gun lock. That’s the number one thing,” says Michigan State Police Lieutenant Mike Shaw. “There’s no reason not to get one. In fact, many newly-purchased firearms today have a gun lock that comes with them. So they are available out there for free, so there is no excuse not to get one.”
Shaw says free gun locks can be picked up at Michigan State Police posts around the state. He adds that if you think your gun is hidden in a good spot, you’re wrong.
