Governor Gretchen Whitmer says she wants to give Michiganders some relief from those high gas prices. She told Michigan News Network the check is in the mail from the state’s auto insurance reform, and she is also supporting a pause in the 6% state sales tax on gasoline.
“$400 per vehicle that drivers are going to be receiving now, so keep an eye out for that in the mailbox,” Whitmer said. “Number two, giving to folks relief in terms of getting rid of the sales tax on gas is something we can take action on quickly, give some relief right now with that kind of a pause.”
Whitmer says the plan supported by Republicans to suspend the 27¢ a gallon gas tax wouldn’t go into effect until next year. She says her plan would take effect immediately. Whitmer says not enough Democrats voted to approve immediate effect for the repeal.
