The city of Buchanan is planning its Third Annual Park Clean Up Day for this Saturday, May 2.
Buchanan City Manager Tony McGhee tells us the Parks and Recreation Board, which includes members from both the city and Buchanan Township, started enlisting the aid of citizens to help clean up parks for the summer a few years ago and it’s been effective. There’s certainly plenty of opportunity to help keep the parks clean, and he invites everyone to come help.
“It’s a really great opportunity to kind of meet other people in your community, experience our parks firsthand,” McGhee said. “We’re pretty lucky for a community our size. We’re only about 4,500 people, but we have almost 60 acres of parks within the community here and a wide range of recreational options within those parks.”
McGhee says Park Clean Up Day will begin at the Redbud City Center in the morning and continue through the early afternoon.
“We’ll be meeting at the community center at 9 a.m. and assigning people to different parks. The three parks we’re going to be focusing on this year are our McCoy Creek Recreation Area, Kathryn Park, as well as the Veterans Memorial Park. That one’s really important to get really in great shape with Memorial Day coming up.”
McGhee says with eight parks in the city, plus the McCoy Creek Trail, the park clean up events are rotating between different properties each year.
Volunteers who attend on Saturday are encouraged to bring a friend, dress for outdoor work, and come ready to enjoy a morning outside. Lunch will be provided with a cookout at the community center once the clean up is over.
