The big day is coming up this Sunday, May 3 at Lake Michigan College, as students attend the college’s 79th annual commencement ceremonies.
LMC Registrar Carrie Beukelman tells us they’ll be handing out 373 degrees, 14 advanced certificates, and 39 certificates of achievement. She says some programs have been showing big numbers this year.
“We always have a pretty big health sciences area,” Beukelman said. “Nursing, also maybe our sonography, RAD tech, those are always big areas. The career tech area has been really, really well represented this year.”
Beukelman says the number of graduates this year is in line with an average year.
There will be two ceremonies on Sunday, one at 10 a.m. for arts and sciences graduates, and one at 1 p.m. for health and workforce graduates. LMC President Ken Flowers and President Emeritus Trevor Kubatzke will both address graduates, and Beukelman says it’ll be an exciting day to be on campus.
“I always say that commencement day is the best school year, and I encourage our faculty to have to be there on their way out into the world.”
The student speakers are Carol Brinzan and Caleb Damoah, both international students. Beukelman says Brinzan is from Germany and is pursuing a four-year degree in psychology, while Damoah is from Ghana and has earned associate degrees in cybersecurity and general studies. Beukelman says it speaks to the quality of the college that students from so far afield are enrolling.
“We really have a really great international population. We don’t have a large population, but I think it just speaks to the level of our education and the things that we offer. Carol is actually, has been a two-sport athlete in both soccer and cross country.”
The ceremonies in the LMC Mendel Center Jenkins Theatre will be livestreamed on the college’s YouTube channel for anyone who wants to watch.
