This is National Consumers Protection Week, and everyone’s being given tips on how to avoid scams.
The advent of AI has given rise to even more confusing and devastating scams. The scammers can now use AI voice cloning to make phone calls, duping the victim into believing they’re talking to a loved one. Kat Cruz from Verizon has some advice.
“You think that there’s an emergency of your family or friends using their voice,” Cruz said. “So this is where we said, make sure to put in some passwords with your family, verbal passwords or phrases so then when someone calls you in an emergency, you can verify it is them, not someone cloning their voice.”
Cruz said if you receive a text scam with a hyperlink, do not click on it and do not respond to the message.
Cruz further advises to check the status of packages or subscription payments only through that company’s official website.
