Berrien County Register of Deeds Lora Freehling is promoting an upcoming workshop on estate planning that she says could be beneficial to many of the people who come into her office.

Speaking to the Berrien County Board of Commissioners this week, Freehling said she often gets visits from residents who learn they’ll have to start a probate case for the transfer of property after the death of a loved one. That can be complex, and she says Legal Aid of Western Michigan is looking to help.

Legal Aid is sponsoring an estate planning clinic,” Freehling said. “This is going to be a free clinic for anyone. They’re going to talk about wills, powers of attorney, transfer on death deeds, also known as ladybird deeds. I’m sure they can talk to them about enhanced life estates, any of that type of thing.”

Freehling said she’s happy to help spread the word about the event because she’s worked firsthand with those who could be helped.

This could benefit so many people. And if an individual qualifies, they can actually sit down with an attorney right there at this event. I think it sounds absolutely wonderful. I’m so glad that they’re doing it.”

Legal Aid of Western Michigan tells us the clinic will be held on April 10 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Region IV Area Agency on Aging office in St. Joseph. Space will be limited, and you can register by calling.

Register by calling 616-928-9899.
