Benton Harbor Mayor Marcus Muhammad says big things are happening in the city as 2026 gets underway.
Speaking at Monday’s city commission meeting, Muhammad said there are several major housing projects making good progress.
“Project T will be — actually by March, some of the duplexes will be available,” Muhammad said. “By October, The Corner at Wall Street will be completed. We are working with Harbor Towers as well as Buss projects where both of those facilities will be totally renovated.”
Project T is the Harbor Habitat for Humanity development at the site of the former Mercy Hospital. The $20.6 million Corner at Wall Street development will be an apartment complex with 46 units when all finished.
Muhammad said with housing, it takes all kinds to make a strong community.
“One of the things I’ve seen in my travels is that the communities with the most diverse housing are thriving the most.”
Muhammad said there are also talks taking place about making renovations at the former Hope VI housing complex on Pipestone. He added right now in Benton Harbor, the butterfly that started out as a caterpillar is about to take flight.
