No charges are being filed following a threat that led to the cancellation of last Friday’s football game between Benton Harbor and Berrien Springs.

The game was called off at the last minute after the Berrien Springs-Oronoko Township Police Department received information about what it described as a non-specific threat. Chief Paul Toliver says the department was contacted by someone claiming to have knowledge of a possible danger to the game, the public, and the players.

Because the report came in late on Friday, Toliver says there wasn’t enough time to ensure safety at the game. He supports the decision by Berrien Springs Public Schools to cancel the game out of caution. Toliver noted that the threat was considered credible at the time, but investigators have since been unable to confirm or rule out its validity.

With no suspects identified and insufficient evidence, police have closed the investigation unless new information emerges. Toliver adds canceling the game was the right call, telling us it was better to err on the side of caution to protect everyone involved.
