Jameson Taillon allowed two hits in six innings, and Michael Busch and Pete Crow-Armstrong homered as the Chicago Cubs beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-0 and got closer to clinching a postseason berth. Chicago (86-64) opened a four-game lead over San Diego for the top NL wild card and trails NL Central-leading Milwaukee by five games with 12 games remaining. The Cubs won for the fifth time in six games and sent the Pirates to their ninth loss in 10 games..

Orioles 4, White Sox 1 – Cowser hits 3-run homer and Orioles hand White Sox their 4th straight loss, 4-1
Colton Cowser hit a three-run home run, Kyle Bradish pitched five strong innings and the Baltimore Orioles beat the White Sox 4-1 to extend Chicago’s skid to four games. Bradish made his fourth start since returning from Tommy John surgery and allowed a run on four hits with nine strikeouts. Dietrich Enns pitched three perfect innings with four strikeouts to earn his second save of the season. Jackson Holliday had two hits and a walk. Holliday has hit safely in 11 straight road games, the longest such streak by an Orioles player age 21 or younger in club history.

NFL – National Football League – Week 2
Last Night
Tampa Bay Buccaneers 20, Houston Texans 19
Los Angeles Chargers 20, Las Vegas Raiders 9

Bucs 20, Texans 19 – Baker Mayfield and Rachaad White rally Bucs to 20-19 win over Texans
Baker Mayfield led an 11-play, 80-yard drive capped by Rachaad White’s 2-yard touchdown run with 6 seconds left, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers rallied past the Houston Texans 20-19. Mayfield threw for 215 yards and two touchdowns for the Bucs, and his 15-yard scramble on fourth-and-10 kept the game-winning drive going. The Texans took a 19-14 lead on a 25-yard TD run by Nick Chubb with 2:10 left. Houston went for 2 but C.J. Stroud was sacked. The Bucs improved to 2-0 while the Texans fell to 0-2. Stroud threw for 207 yards and a touchdown.

Chargers 20, Raiders 9 – Herbert and strong defense lead Chargers to 20-9 win over Raiders
Justin Herbert passed for 242 yards and two touchdowns, leading the Chargers to a 20-9 victory over the Raiders. This win gave Los Angeles coach Jim Harbaugh a victory over rival Las Vegas coach Pete Carroll, who turned 74 on Monday. The Chargers lost defensive end Khalil Mack to a left elbow injury in the first quarter. Herbert also led the Chargers in rushing with 31 yards. The Chargers’ defense held the Raiders to 218 yards. Geno Smith threw three interceptions for the Raiders. This win put the Chargers atop the AFC West with a 2-0 record.

NFL – Bengals confirm Joe Burrow will have surgery on left toe. QB could miss 3 months
Cincinnati Bengals coach Zac Taylor has confirmed that quarterback Joe Burrow will have surgery on his injured left toe. Taylor didn’t have a timeline Monday for when Burrow will have surgery or how long the franchise quarterback might be out. The turf toe injury is expected to sideline Burrow a minimum of three months. It is Burrow’s third major injury in his six seasons since being the top overall pick in the 2020 draft. It’s a major blow to Cincinnati, which is off to its first 2-0 start since 2018 and has postseason aspirations after missing the playoffs the past two seasons.

NFL – Lions thrilled with win over Bears, face big challenge next week in Baltimore
The Detroit Lions bounced back in a big way on Sunday, routing the Chicago Bears 52-21 to help recover from a season-opening loss to the Green Bay Packers.  They can’t celebrate long, though. Next Monday, they travel to Baltimore for a matchup with the Ravens.  The Lions improved in every facet of the game against the Bears, but the offensive line made the biggest jump. They opened holes for 177 rushing yards and two touchdowns after gaining just 47 yards and no scores against the Packers. The Lions also didn’t allow a sack after the Packers got Goff four times. Jared Goff benefited from the extra time to throw, completing 23 of 28 for 334 yards and five touchdowns. Amon-Ra St. Brown caught nine passes for 115 yards and three touchdowns. Goff’s other big playmaker was Jameson Williams. He only caught two passes against the Bears, but they went for 108 yards and a touchdown.

NFL – Johnson facing challenges on both sides of the ball in his first year as Bears coach
Ben Johnson’s return to Detroit turned into a nightmare for the Chicago Bears and their new coach. A day after getting embarrassed 52-21 by the Lions, the Bears insisted Monday they can get themselves pointed in the right direction after two gut-punch losses to start the season. Johnson says the Bears’ style of play was a bigger problem than the scheme against Detroit. Caleb Williams faded after a strong start for the second straight game in Johnson’s offense. And the defense couldn’t do much of anything to stop Jared Goff and the Lions’ offense, which Johnson previously led as coordinator.

NFL – Vikings QB McCarthy’s sprained ankle will keep him out for next game vs. Bengals
Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy will likely miss the next game with a sprained ankle, according to coach Kevin O’Connell. McCarthy didn’t miss any game time during Minnesota’s 22-6 loss to Atlanta. He passed an initial medical evaluation and got his foot taped for extra support after the injury occurred late in the third quarter. The ankle pain worsened overnight, O’Connell said, and the decision to sideline McCarthy for the game against Cincinnati this Sunday was not performance-related. Carson Wentz, who joined the Vikings two weeks ago, will start against the Bengals.
