The McCoy’s Creek Trail Extension project is nearing fruition in Buchanan.

This initiative involves a 4.2-mile trail that will link Buchanan to Niles and has been in development for several years, and will now come to life with a groundbreaking ceremony this month. The project will broaden the trail network from the McCoy’s Creek trailhead in Buchanan all the way to Winn Road.

Friends of Berrien Trails Marcy Hamilton tells us that construction is anticipated to begin this month or in early April.

“So this project specifically gets us to from the east side of Buchanan at Shimmer Parkway up to Walton Road and down Walton Road to River St. Joe,” Hamilton says. “And there’ll be a trailhead there.”

Hamilton also noted her enthusiasm for the continuous growth of trails in Berrien County, with a vision of creating an interconnected network that includes other trail systems in the region.

“We’re also working over along the lake shore, connecting New Buffalo all the way up to Stevensville along Red Arrow Highway, connecting New Buffalo over to Chicago at the Market Greenway, and we’re also working on a trail north of Benton Harbor, St. Joe that’ll connect up to South Haven into the Kal Haven Trail,” Hamilton says.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the McCoy’s Creek Trail is set for March 10 at 10 a.m. at River St. Joe Brewery.
