A Coloma woman is dead following a standoff with police on Wednesday morning.
The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department says an officer with the Coloma Township Police Department was called to a home in the 200 block of Pearl Street in the city of Coloma around 3:40 a.m. when the woman called 911 to report someone was going to set fire to her house.
Upon arrival, the Coloma Township officer approached and saw the woman pointing a long gun at him. He took cover and called for backup.
The woman told 911 her intent was to shoot police officers.
The Berrien County Sheriff’s Office Tactical Response Unit was then brought in and made contact with the woman, telling her to drop the rifle and come outside.
The standoff continued for about one and a half hours before police got a search warrant. As officers entered the home, the sheriff’s department says they tried using “less lethal rounds” to get the woman into custody. However, it says “one of the less lethal rounds penetrated the upper chest of the female,” and she was pronounced dead at Corewell Health Hospital.
The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department and the Coloma Township Police Department have asked Michigan State Police to investigate the incident.
The name of the woman has not yet been released.
