Some seniors from St. Joseph High School are helping to beautify Benton Township by picking up trash.
Benton Township Supervisor Kathy Yates tells us she was contacted by a teacher from the school who proposed the effort. The students are focused on the shopping district from the former Target to Walmart.
“Each student or group of students had to choose a project to do and they chose cleaning over here in our area, which is good for us because we really need the trash picked up,” Yates said. “It looked pretty bad over there.”
Yates says the kids have been picking up trash since late last month.
“They’ve made quite a difference. They’ve picked up a bunch of things.”
Yates says the students are typically out there on Monday afternoons, and either she, the police chief, or other township staff will go and keep an eye on things. The picked up trash is left in bags the students tie to a utility pole and then sanitation staff come and pick up the bags.
The students did the same thing last year, and Yates said it really helped. The effort will be going on all month.
