Governor Gretchen Whitmer spent time Wednesday laying out the priorities of her $80 billion budget proposal for fiscal year 2025.

Speaking before state House and Senate lawmakers in Lansing, the governor shared highlights of her proposed budget. They include a $1.4 billion one-time spend to refurbish or build up to 10,000 new housing units across the state.

“This is a game changing thing for Michigan families, and we know that this old housing stock and the dearth of housing stock is something that we’ve got to continue to chip away at,” Whitmer said. “So, a $1.4 billion investment is going to be game changing. It is ten times what we were spending ten years ago.”

When it comes to education, the governor also reiterated her call for tuition-free community college or skills training for all high school graduates, a proposal dubbed the Michigan Guarantee. Her budget also proposes a 2.5% increase in per pupil funding statewide, totaling roughly $9,850 per student.
