Michigan lawmakers want to set upper payment limits on big pharmaceutical companies as thousands of Michiganders are plagued with high prescription drug prices. New legislation announced Tuesday will create a Prescription Drug Affordability Board, which will be an independent body to set those prescription payment limits. State Senator Darrin Camilleri says they want to hold Big Pharma accountable.
“We’re going after bad actors in the pharmaceutical industry, those that we know have been price gouging Michigan residents for far too long,” Camilleri said. “This is going to be a tool that’s finally going to hold them accountable and reign in those prices by essentially telling them that they’re going to have to lower the costs of things like insulin.”
Governor Gretchen Whitmer initially called for the creation of the board in her What’s Next address. Supporters would like to see legislation passed this fall.
