A Lawrence man is facing charges of animal cruelty, among other things, for shooting a dog. Michigan State Police say 58-year-old Steven Douglas was arrested on June 22 on a firearms charge and charges of killing or torturing an animal and resisting police. Troopers were called out to Blackman Street near Van Buren Tech in Lawrence and witnesses led them to an injured dog in the grass. The dog’s owner took the animal to a veterinarian where it was put down due to its severe injuries. Another dog was also injured. While investigating, troopers saw Steven Douglas approaching in a golf cart, but he turned around and they had to follow him to his home. They then arrested him for refusing to stop when they called to him. Troopers say the suspect shot the dog with a shotgun for allegedly attacking his chickens and cat. He has since been arraigned on charges of animal cruelty causing death and resisting or obstructing officers. Bond for each charge was set at $50,000.
