The Berrien County Board of Commissioners has been briefed on a new program that could help homeowners who have fallen behind on payments to stay in their homes. The county Finance Committee this week heard from Treasurer Shelly Weich about MI-HAF, or the Michigan Homeowner Assistance Fund. Commissioner Teri Freehling told colleagues who it helps.

“It was launched to assist homeowners who may be having hardship, whether it be mortgage delinquencies, defaults, foreclosures,” Freehling said. “We discussed mobile home park lot payments would also be eligible in this, households with household incomes less than 50% of the area median income.”

Freehling said the program was made possible by the 2021 American Rescue Plan. Weich told the committee this week the county has about $12.4 million in delinquent taxes this year, about $1 million more than last year.
