Hands-on science for elementary students is happening at Lake Michigan College as the 2023 Annual Elementary Science Olympiad Event kicks off.
This annual event is an opportunity for elementary students to use everyday objects to explore and understand science. Sixteen schools are sending close to 600 students to LMC for the event. Student Activities Coordinator Tonya Snyder with Berrien RESA said it’s all about leading students to learning.
“You know, and talk to them about the engineering behind what they did or the creativity behind what they did, or the measuring that happened as part of what they did, just to make science accessible and, and recognize the science all around us,” said Snyder.
Children grades 2 through 5 are building cars, catapults, bridges, towers, and other things using water, tinfoil, and other kitchen-accessible products. The intended outcome is to make science more exciting and engaging beyond the textbooks, and to build a life-long interest in learning more about science.
