The Berrien County Jail is a bit overcrowded. Speaking Thursday to colleagues, Berrien County Commissioner Jim Curran said the county administration committee heard this week from Sheriff Paul Bailey.

“He did inform us this morning that he is over his maximum allotted number of inmates,” Curran said. “He’s got 344, and he’s only allowed 341. So, he’ll work with the courts to get that number down. He’s got six days to do it.”

Curran said a judge will review the situation and determine who should be let out of the jail. If that doesn’t happen, the county chief judge will have to suspend some sentences to get the jail population down. Curran said with the pandemic out of mind and things returning to something that resembles normal, activity for the sheriff’s department has been increasing.
