Dodgers 11, White Sox 9 – After 2-strike intentional walk, Muncy powers Dodgers
Max Muncy broke open the game with a three-run homer in the sixth inning after White Sox manager Tony La Russa ordered an intentional walk to Trea Turner with a 1-2 count, helping the Los Angeles Dodgers beat Chicago 11-9. Muncy had five RBIs in his return after missing 11 games with left elbow inflammation. Los Angeles trailed 4-0 before a six-run fifth and was ahead 6-5 when Freddie Freeman hit an RBI single off Bennett Sousa. Sousa bounced an 0-2 slider for a wild pitch that allowed Freeman to take second and La Russa wanted a left-on-left matchup.

Catcher Willson Contreras and the Chicago Cubs avoided an arbitration hearing by agreeing to a one-year contract for $9.625 million. The agreement is at the midpoint between the $10.25 million the 30-year-old Contreras had asked for and the $9 million the Cubs had offered when figures were exchanged. Contreras hit .237 with 21 homers and 57 RBIs in 128 games last season. He led National League catchers in assists for the third time. The two-time All-Star is batting .277 with 10 homers and 23 RBIs this season.

NBA – Curry’s diagnosis for Game 4 of finals: ‘I’m going to play’
Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry says there’s no doubt that he’ll play in Game 4 of the NBA Finals against Boston. The two-time NBA MVP injured his ankle late in Game 3. Boston won 116-100 to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series. Curry says the injury is the same one he sustained in a late-season game against the Celtics. He missed the last 12 games of the regular season, but he says this injury isn’t as bad. Game 4 is in Boston on Friday night before the series returns to San Francisco.
NCAAFB – Grandson of retired Michigan coach commits to Notre Dame
The grandson of retired Michigan coach Lloyd Carr has committed to playing football at Notre Dame in 2024. Saline High School quarterback CJ Carr announced his decision Thursday night. Carr chose the Fighting Irish over the Wolverines, Georgia, LSU, Wisconsin and Michigan State. His father was a backup quarterback at Michigan and his mother also graduated from the school. Maternal grandfather Tom Curtis was an All-America defensive back for the Wolverines in 1969. Carr says he always planned to leave the state for college and is excited about Marcus Freeman’s program and Tommy Rees’ offense at Notre Dame.

Golf – LIV/PGA – PGA Tour says Saudi-paid players no longer eligible for tour
The PGA Tour says members who are playing in the Saudi-funded league in London are no longer eligible to play tour events. Commissioner Jay Monahan sent a memo indicating the sanctions against Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson and 15 other players. The memo went out a short time after the LIV Golf Invitational outside London began with a 48-player field. The decision includes the Presidents Cup. Monahan says even if players resigned their membership, they are not eligible as nonmembers to get sponsor exemptions to tournaments. The USGA already said players can still play the U.S. Open next week. LIV Golf is run by Greg Norman and funded by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund. It responded to the PGA Tour’s decision by calling it vindictive and divisive.
Golf – PGA – Clark leads in Toronto
Wyndham Clark started the week with a late charge to play his way into the U.S. Open in a qualifier, and then he stayed hot Thursday in the RBC Canadian Open for a 7-under 63 to take the first-round lead. Clark opened with five birdies in nine holes and kept bogeys off his card at St. George’s Golf and Country Club for the third round of his PGA Tour career at 63 or lower. Matt Fitzpatrick was a stroke back, and Doug Ghim and Harold Varner III followed at 65.
Tennis – Wimbledon – Wimbledon record prize money at full-capacity tournament
Wimbledon will offer a record total of $50.5 million in player compensation but the singles champions will receive less than the pre-pandemic amount. The All England Club says prize money excluding per diems totals a record $48.8 million. The men’s and women’s singles winners will each earn $2.5 million, 14.9% less than in 2019. The overall prize money is an 11% increase over last year, when capacity was reduced because of coronavirus restrictions, and a 5.4% increase over 2019. The oldest Grand Slam tournament begins June 27 and organizers highlighted plans for the grass-court competition to be at full capacity for the first time in three years.
NCAASFB – Oklahoma beats Texas, repeats as softball national champs
Kinzie Hansen and Grace Lyons hit three-run homers, Jayda Coleman made two spectacular defensive plays and No. 1 seed Oklahoma defeated unseeded Texas 10-5 to win its second straight Women’s College World Series title. The Sooners claimed the best-of-three series 2-0 after winning Game 1 16-1. Jocelyn Alo, the two-time USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year who had been dominant throughout the World Series, hit a hard single in her final at-bat in the sixth inning. She ends her career with a Division I record 122 home runs. It was Oklahoma’s sixth overall championship and fifth in the past nine World Series.
Athletics – Info gathered from new law leads to 4-year doping ban
Information from the first case to be prosecuted under a new law designed to criminalize widespread doping conspiracies has been used to level a four-year ban on a triple jumper from Georgia. The U.S Anti-Doping Agency announced the sanction for 27-year-old Sabina Allen, who competes for Jamaica. Allen tested positive for two prohibited substances after finishing first at a low-level event in California last May. Evidence for the case came from a criminal case against Eric Lira. He was charged under the Rodchenkov Antidoping Act, which was passed to go after people and organizations that fund and promote international doping schemes.
NFL – State lawmakers table measure aimed at luring Commanders to Virginia
The Virginia General Assembly is tabling for the year legislation intended to lure the Washington Commanders to Virginia. That’s according to a top state lawmaker who sponsored one version of the legislation. Democratic Senate Majority Leader Dick Saslaw said in a brief interview that there were too many issues to be resolved and controversies surrounding the NFL team for the legislation to proceed. He says it could be reintroduced next year. The team did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The development came a day after an assistant coach for the team issued an apology for a comparison he made on social media between the violent attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, and the protests in the wake of the police killing of George Floyd.
