Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services have announced the Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association has started the transfer of $3 billion in surplus funds to Michigan’s auto insurers, meaning Michigan drivers are already starting to receive their $400 per-vehicle insurance refunds. Auto insurers have to send out the refund checks or deposits as quickly as possible and no later than May 9. The state says you don’t have to do anything to get your refund. It will be automatic as long as you have a proper insurance policy on your vehicle. The refunds are $400 or $80 for historic vehicles. In December, the MCCA voted unanimously to return around $3 billion of the surplus funds to Michiganders while maintaining about $2 billion in surplus funds to ensure catastrophic crash survivors still get care. However, some who were catastrophically injured in crashes say they are not getting enough care since auto insurance reforms were implemented. The state says if you don’t get your refund by May 9, call your auto insurance provider.
