The South Haven Ice Breaker Festival is this week. The event will feature a whole range of activities to celebrate the winter season. Kathy Wagaman with the South Haven Area Chamber of Commerce tells WSJM News the 28th annual event, always held the first weekend of February, kicks off Friday with winter disk golf from dawn to dusk. The ice skating at the South Haven Ice Rink starts at 4 p.m. and then the Snowsuit Fashion Show starts at 7 p.m.

“It’s a chance for you to put on your funkiest, your ugliest, your most glamorous snowsuit and walk the red carpet,” Wagaman said. “We have a runway, and the crowds will help us decide who the winners are.”

There will be prizes. Wagaman says ice carving starts at 7 a.m. Saturday.

“It’s fun to see what these pros and amateurs will create out of a 300 or 600 pound block of ice.”

The judging will be at 1 p.m. You can learn to curl at the ice rink from 9 to noon, there will be a 5K, a chili cookoff between local restaurants and bars, the frozen fish fling, and a cardboard sled race, all on Saturday. Wagaman says they couldn’t hold the Ice Breaker Festival last year and there was no snow in 2020. She says this week’s weather ought to make it perfect for the Ice Breaker Fest.
