Police are noticing the reappearance of gas pump credit card skimmers in southwest Michigan. Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard Fuller says scammers secretly install the card number-stealing devices in the pump’s card readers and internal computers.
“It’s something that we all need to be very vigilant about,” Fuller said. “Part of being vigilant is checking your credit card statement, paying attention to that phone call that does come from the credit card company.”
One thing to look out for are stickers that many gas stations install on the pumps to show they haven’t been opened. Fuller says the scammers seem to put the devices gas pumps along the I-94 and U-131 corridors. If you notice anyone tampering with a gas pump, you should notify the station or police.
