State Employees Notified Of Possible Layoffs

Notification has gone out to around 48,000 people who are state employees in Michigan warning them of a possible temporary layoff starting October 1 if a new budget isn’t in place. Republicans in the House and Senate are working to move their own budget bills after talks with Governor Whitmer broke down last week. If there is a shutdown, which both sides say they’re trying to avoid, several things would be closed right away like state parks.

“If you were planning to visit a Secretary of State branch office, those would be closed,” says Michigan Budget Office spokesman Kurt Weiss. “The Michigan Lottery would be shut down. So it’s those kind of things that impact people across the state that you’d start to see right away.”

He says Michigan State Police would remain on the job and with pay, along with Child Protective Services employees and prison guards.
