Three Southwest Michigan faith communities are coming together to host a free screening of an award-winning film next month in South Haven.
The First Hebrew Congregation of South Haven, Lily of the Valley Church in Covert, and Temple B’nai Shalom in St. Joseph are teaming up for a showing of Old Heart on June 22 at Lake Michigan College in South Haven. Old Heart tells the little-known story of American Black soldiers who fought in the occupied Netherlands during World War II, helping to save Jews, resistance fighters, and Dutch citizens.
Organizers say the screening comes amid efforts to restore historical panels recently removed from a U.S. military cemetery in the Netherlands that commemorated the efforts of those solders. Everyone’s invited to attend the screening and hear from the filmmakers about the picture’s modern-day significance.
Reservations to the screenings can be made by emailing shapirolerner@gmail.com, and you can learn more about the movie right here.
