A 10-year-old boy has died after being struck by a vehicle in Van Buren County’s Porter Township on Thursday.
The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department says deputies were called to the 72,000 block of 22nd Street around 8:10 a.m. on a report of a car-pedestrian crash. They learned the child was crossing the road after checking a family mailbox when they were struck by an SUV driven by a 38-year-old woman. The driver immediately called 911.
Lawton Quick Response, Van Buren EMS, and sheriff’s deputies provided medical aid to the child at the scene. The child was later taken to Bronson Hospital, where he died.
Mattawan Consolidated School District Superintendent Randy Fleenor issued a statement Thursday saying the district has assembled its crisis team to help anyone in the district family. He extended the district’s deepest condolences to the family of the boy, who was a student at Later Elementary School.
The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department Accident Reconstruction Unit is investigating the crash.
